The Loch Ness Monster, also known as Nessie, is a mythical creature that is said to live in the Loch Ness of Scotland. The monster is often depicted as being large, long-necked, and having one or more humps that protrude from the water.
The legend of the Loch Ness Monster dates back over 1,400 years. Some of the earliest evidence of a strange creature in Loch Ness comes from stone carvings by the Picts, which depict a beast with flippers, a long beak, and a head locket or spout. The first written account of the monster appears in a 7th-century biography of St. Columba.
The modern legend of the Loch Ness Monster began in 1933 when a couple claimed to have seen a huge animal rolling and plunging on the surface of the loch. In 1934, a photograph was published that claimed to show the monster, and the hunt for Nessie began in earnest. However, much of the evidence supporting the monster's existence has been discredited. In 1960, an expedition from Oxford and Cambridge universities found that sightings of a multi-humped sea serpent were actually boat wakes.
